I believe that Joni is one of Fiji’s national treasures, not only for the brilliance of his insights on the political situation in Fiji but also for his courage in stating publicly where there can be improvements in the governance of the country.
Joni did not make a speech at the dinner but read the following poem, which he had composed.

Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi (born 1957) was the Vice-President of Fiji from 2004 to 2006.
Madraiwiwi was dismissed from office on 5 December 2006 by the Military Commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, who seized power in a military coup.
Installed as the Roko Tui Bau on 11 November 1995, Ratu Madraiwiwi is one of the highest chiefs of the Kubuna Confederacy.

 Coup perpetrators must pay - Madraiwiwi
Former High Court judge and High Chief, Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi says that the perpetrators of the coup of 2000 must pay for their crimes.
Madraiwiwi made the comments while giving a lecture at the University of the South Pacific.
Madraiwiwi stated that the law must take its course and those guilty of the offences against the state must pay for them.

 Another judge resigns
Justice Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi had resigned at the same time as Justice Jai Ram Reddy had resigned from the Presidency of the Fiji Court of Appeal.
Reddy is setting up private practice while Madraiwiwi is joining the private law firm of Howards.
Madraiwiwi resigned for the same reasons as Reddy - that they did not approve of the attempted abrogation of the 1997 Constitution.

SUVA, Fiji: Fiji's powerful council of tribal chiefs renewed its defiance of the country's military regime Thursday, as the newly installed prime minister conceded the takeover was illegal but necessary to clean up corruption in the former government.
Fiji's hugely influential Great Council of Chiefs, who appointed Madraiwiwi and President Ratu Josefa Iloilo, condemned the move and threw its support behind the two leaders despite Bainimarama's announcement Tuesday that he had assumed presidential powers.
And, "Ratu Joni's removal from office is illegal, unconstitutional and most disrespectful," he added.
