Later with Jools Holland - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is notable for its musical diversity and adventurism, as it draws from a large palette of both popular and World music, and each show features around five bands with a variety of styles performing for each other and a small studio audience.
Later with Jools Holland is distinguished from otherwise similar television music shows, thanks to the jam session involving all of his invited guests, along with Holland on piano, at the beginning of each programme.
Because of Holland's relaxed and confident presentation and the diversity of musical styles the series is seen by many as a fitting successor to the Old Grey Whistle Test.

Depending on who you talk to, the irrepressible Jools Holland is best known as a blisteringly energetic piano-pounding performer of boogie-woogie, jazz and R&B; or as the keyboard-wizard sideman to one of the great new-wave pop bands of the seventies and eighties; or as one of the UK's most popular television presenters.
Holland's occasional contributions as a composer/frontman for Squeeze were limited exclusively to B-sides or album tracks.
But by the mid-90's, however, Holland's fame as a television presenter (and his consequent list of celebrity contacts), coupled with his well-earned reputation for top-notch musicianship, meant that he had the clout to tour with (and record big budget albums with) a full scale forties-style big band.

Jools told Miranda Sawyer that "this is the sort of music Tom and I would play if we were in a hotel room late at night or if we happened to go into a bar after we played and there was a piano there, this is the sort of music we'd play.
Tom and Jools hope that when people hear this album, they may be encouraged to go out and discover for themselves the music that inspired it.

He may have been a member of Squeeze during their glory days, but to most people nowadays, Jools Holland is best known as the affable host of the BBC's great music program, Later.
Jools Holland's Big Band Rhythm & Blues, which has a whopping 22 songs featuring a whole slew of guest artists, is a real musical mishmash, and for the most part, a pleasurable one, sounding like an episode of Later.
Jools Holland's Big Band Rhythm & Blues, which, in a bizarre marketing strategy by Rhino Records, replaced the cute UK title Small World Big Band, is a nice, casual album, suitable for folks looking for some decent, old-fashioned R&B to add to their CD collections.

For two hours, Holland and his powerhouse of an orchestra convinced a cold, wet Edinburgh audience that they were dancing in the sunshine.

Holland's replacement, the smooth-singing Paul Carrack, also had a solo career both before and after his Squeeze tenure, and unlike Holland was a significant commercial success.
Holland left by 1991, not replaced at first; Carrack rejoined, Lavis replaced by Pete Thomas (drums), by 1993.
Elsewhere, though, Holland overindulges his interests in boogie-woogie and swing: the Cab Calloway-like "Biggy Wiggy" gets repeated as an instrumental, there's a super-slick torch song (Percy Mayfield's "Danger Zone"), and there's not one but two flat-out 40s revival dance numbers ("Grand Hotel," written with Sting; "The Maiden's Lament," with some furious stride piano).
