Communication between people is the core of Joonas Kokkonen's music   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Kokkonen is one of those composers who have created a musical universe of their own and managed to make their voice heard through the crusted patina of centuries of western art music polyphony.
In the Third Symphony, Kokkonen liberates himself convincingly from the mental limitations that the application of twelve-note structures on the material after all implied, and he unleashes his entire musical and sonorous fantasy without compromising the rigorousness of his symphonic principles.
Kokkonen has absorbed influences from near and far and, had he been armed to a lesser degree with personal integrity, he may well have become one of the most skilled eclectics of the 20th century.

Joonas Kokkonen followed his own paths and created a personalic style which was very different from the style of Sibelius.
Kokkonen's music was influenced by Bach, Mozart, Bartók and other masters of Baroque and 20th century music.

classical music: Joonas Kokkonen   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Kokkonen (1921-1996) is in the line of Finnish symphonists that starts with Sibelius and takes it to the end of the century.
He avoided most of the century's trends, making use early on of the dodecaphonic style, but refused to do so rigidly.
This is an astonishing collection of the Kokkonen symphonies, none of which are too long.

 Discovering the symphonic repertoire
The Finnish composer Joonas Kokkonen (1921-1996) may be quite fairly described as a serious, very earnest composer.
His work is not superficial by any means, and his symphonies are works of quality --although not in the accessible melodic/rhythmic vein of Tubin--which have assimilated their influences and go beyond them without sounding like them.
The finale is slow and by turns stately and "natural", the music dissolving in the end to the sounds of the very beginning of the work.
