Joondalup (31°44′42″S, 115°45′57″E; post code: 6027) is a northern suburb and key regional centre in Perth, Western Australia.
The name Joondalup is a Noongar Aboriginal word, first recorded in 1837 and possibly meaning either "place of whiteness or glistening", or "place of a creature that can only move backwards".
Joondalup is bounded by Burns Beach Road to the north, the proposed Mitchell Freeway to the west, Eddystone and Lakeside Drives to the south and Lake Joondalup to the east.

Joondalup, like many other place names in the district, has been taken from the Aboriginal language and means, "The Place of the Glistening" relating to Lake Joondalup, which is the major water feature of the area.

The proposed ‘Joondalup Family Health Study’ would be a modern version of the highly successful Busselton Health Study which has been ongoing since 1966, and would aim to aid research into the causes, treatment and prevention of many common diseases such as cancer, heart disease, asthma, obesity and diabetes.
If it went ahead, the Joondalup Family Health study would deliver a first-class resource that would be likely to lead to breakthroughs in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the promotion of health for Joondalup residents, future generations of their families and for the wider national and international community.
If a Joondalup Family Health Study was successful, consideration could be given to extending to a larger scale study involving other communities in Western Australia and, in the longer term, possibly the whole state.
