Amazon.com: The Clouds Above: Books: Jordan Crane   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-22)
Crane has made his reputation with subtle, heart-tuggingly depressive comics like The Last Lonely Saturday and Keeping Two, so his new project is a delightful surprise: a rip-roaring adventure about a kid named Simon, who skips school one day with his cat, Jack, and climbs a magic staircase leading skyward.
Crane's story piles absurdity on delicious absurdity, operating with the peculiarly linear logic of children's storytelling.
Crane has a sense of all of his characters' body language—Jack may talk, but his motion and expressions are totally catlike, and the shifting expressions and indistinct, grasping limbs of the clouds are exactly what clouds would look like if they had body parts.

Crane does a good job telling this story with almost no dialogue (and our protagonist never speaks); you can tell what's going through his mind based entirely on his facial expressions and his actions.
Crane's story has so much emotion packed into it that it becomes part of the story, and transforms what could be distressing events into happy ones.
Crane wouldn't have been able to pull off this story's nearly-wordless nature without being able to express so much of it through his art.

A fatal crane accident at the Sikorsky Memorial Bridge may have been caused by a flaw in the demolition plan, according to a state police investigator and reported Friday by the New Haven Register.
Charles Jordan, 60, of Satsuma, Ala., died Feb. 17 when the crane he was operating toppled off a barge into the Housatonic River under the weight of a beam that was nearly twice as heavy as the crane was designed to hold, state police say.
The two cranes were rated to lift about 40 tons each, or a total of about 80 tons, Llewellyn said.
