An Evening with John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess: This 2000 performance at the Helen Hayes Performing Arts Center in Nyack, New York by John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess was truly special as most of the compositions were written in a relatively short period.
Rudess was recognized by his 2nd grade teacher for his piano playing and was immediately given professional tuition.
Rudess chose the Dregs, primarily as being a part time member of the band would have less of an impact on his young family, a choice he was not given with Dream Theater.

Jordan: The tone was very much in that kind of thing, a pure kind of waveform with a little bit of portamento.
Jordan: No. The closest thing I’ll ever do to that is play the usual “oohs” and “ahhs” that come from a keyboard as part of my pad.
Jordan: We’re not going to do that because basically we’re in a position where we create the kind of music that we want whether it be like Train of Thought just because we want to create a classic metal style album, but we’re not in a position to try to go completely commercial now.

My initial experience hearing Jordan play was about five years back, at a concert in Torrington, CT at which he sessioned, taking a "star turn" on grand piano and his trustworthy Kurzweil synth and figuratively knocking my socks off with his improvisations and technical wizardry.
The album is Jordan's personal tribute to 9/11, (largely) performed at the Helen Hayes Theater in Nyack, NY on September 24, 2001, but with some studio additions after the fact.
Rudess is one of today's improvisational wizards, and this album is an outstanding example of his work.

 Releases Jordan Rudess Prime Cuts
Taken from Jordan’s album Steinway to Heaven, it is not so much revolutionary intrinsically but in its contrast to the surrounding material.
It is not the use of diverse keyboard timbres and patches that defines Jordan Rudess’ modus but, rather, the concealing of them or, at least, the melding of them to good effect.
In a surprise move, Rudess takes to the lower register of his instrument and Portnoy to his unison floor toms, establishing an almost tribal vibe (shades of Edgar Winter’s “Peace Pipe”!).

When Jordan's teacher informed his mother how much the class enjoyed having him play piano, Jordan's mom was flabbergasted, informing the teacher she was unaware Jordan even knew how to play the piano.
Jordan's parents immediately purchased a piano for the young maestro and 12-years of intense piano lessons commenced.
In his teens, a friend introduced Jordan to a Moog synthesizer and that's when, as Jordan puts it, "The disease set in," and he was infected by the Rock and Roll bug, instantly gravitating to bands such as ELP and YES and their gifted keyboardists, Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman, respectively.

Listening back to the recordings Jordan felt the improvisations sounded the best yet there was not sufficient material to fill a complete album so he recorded some extra instrumentals in his studio the week after.
Jordan then leaves this path in search of a more rhythmic pattern which he finds and explores during ‘Speed as light’ almost adding a salsa feel to his slightly avantgarde pianoplaying before ending with some slow chords.
