Club Atlético Independiente - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Many great Argentinian players have worn the red outfit, adopted in tribute to England's Nottingham Forest in the early years of the club's history.
Daniel Bertoni and Jorge Burruchaga became World Champions in 1978 and 1986 respectively with Argentina, but Independiente fans remember more fondly Ricardo "el Bocha" Bochini, who even though in Mexico in 1986, didn't get to play.
An incredibly talented midfield player who played for the club from the early seventies until his retirement in the mid-nineties, Bochini was less fortunate with a national team dominated at the time by Diego Armando Maradona playing in his position.

True, it was the right foot of another Argentine, Jorge Burruchaga, that sealed the 3-2 victory over West Germany in the game's 84th minute, slanting the ball low and fast past a despairing, spread-eagled Harald Schumacher into the net.
Unexpectedly, it was Argentina with the strong defense, led by its fullback, Jose Luis Brown.
Burruchaga centered the ball and Joe -- sorry -- Jose unorthodoxly ran up from the defense to head it home and give Argentina a 1-0 lead.

As a player Burruchaga was the club's symbol (he played for the club in two periods, 1982-1985 and 1995-2002) and won very much: the Argentine championship in 1983, the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup in 1984, the Recopa and the Supercopa in 1995.
