Jornada del Muerto Desert - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Jornada del Muerto ("Journey of the Deadman" in Spanish) was the name given by the Spanish conquistadors to the 1660s route northward from New Spain, or Mexico.
The Jornada del Muerto includes a large lava field in its northern half and is a long stretch of flat, nearly waterless land about 110 miles from north to south that remains almost entirely uninhabited and undeveloped to this day.
The southernmost portion of the Jornada del Muerto, northeast of Las Cruces, is now an LTER (long-term ecological research) station, used for study of desert ecology, land management, plant physiology, and related topics.
