		Jose Gonzalez is a rare talent, a humble performer, and a genuinely good guy.
		Jose's calming tone/voice is supported by some beautiful guitar music - its like having a warm rush come through your bedroom when you listen to this album.
		Jose is a talented guitarist, and when he lets himself go his vocals are good also, but, particularly at the beginning of this short (36 mins) album, he sings in a very subdued, clipped style that cuts the vocal sound short at the end of lines and doesn't allow the songs to breathe.

		I picked up Jose Gonzalez's new album Veneer today, having discovered it, as many of you have, from hearing the hit song "Heartbeats" featured in the Sony Bravia commercial which is a beautifully lyrical rendition of the song originally written by The Knife (see my article on what makes a good cover).
		The album contains twelve short songs, the brevity of which is in keeping for this sort of instrumentation, which rarely exceeds Jose Gonzalez vocals (usually doubled) and a single track of classical guitar.
		Those familiar with "Heartbeats" are already acquainted with Jose Gonzalez's richly mellow vocals which, like his dark chocolate sounding guitar-work, is characterized by a sort of low-register, heaviness that seems suspended on wings of focused melodies and guitar and vocal nuances of occasional graceful accents.

		After a quiet bridge in the middle of the track, Gonzalez comes back with a renewed vigor, layering some subtle vocal harmonies and hitting strings so hard they rattle.
		Although he keeps things fairly simple, Gonzalez wisely incorporates a few sparse percussive elements into a few songs, such as the excellent "Stay In The Shade." Once again, it's a small thing, but it helps break up the album slightly.
		For my money, the best track on the album is "Save Your Day," a track where Gonzalez changes up his playing style into more of a heavy, slow strum, but in combination with his vocals, the quietly aggressive track is easily an album standout.

		In naming his debut Veneer, Jose Gonzalez seems to suggest that his work contains a certain superficiality that is designed to mask a less desirable substratum, and in effect, he couldn’t have chosen a better title to grace the set.
		Inside the intoxicating circularity of the rhythms, however, lies an ominous air, and what at first appears to be bathed in warm intimacy, soon reveals itself to be disturbingly distanced.
		Crossing the pastoral melancholia of Nick Drake with the urban folk of Paul Simon, Gonzalez essentially weaves together an impressionistic tale that is haunted by death.

		Other than the occasional ‘thank you’ to the crowd, Gonzalez focused on his carefully structured picking (often using one hand for rhythm and the other for melody).
		It wasn’t until his encore when an audience member shouted a song request that Gonzalez let a bit of humor show, replying simply, “No.” He then stated it was a custom in his native Sweden to be hard on people to keep from being soft.
		With only a single disc to draw from, it was an all too brief evening (with Gonzalez augmenting his catalog with a quirky Bronski Beat cover), but it was clear that this was a rare chance to see an important artist developing.
