The Itching Parrot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Given Lizardi's career as a pioneering Mexican journalist, his novel can also be read as a journal of opinion in the guise of a picaresque novel.
At the same time, as critics have noted, Lizardi's interest in depicting the realities and reproducing the speech of Mexicans from all social classes make his novel a bridge between the inherited picaresque mold that forms its overt structure and the costumbrista novels of the nineteenth century.
José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi is emblematic of the generation of intellectuals, artists, and writers who led Mexico into the modern era.

Jose Joaquin Fernandez De Lizardi - Freepedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Lizardi was born in Mexico City to professional-class parents of moderate means, his mother the daughter of a Puebla bookseller and his father a physician who for some time supported his family by writing.
Lizardi began his literary career in 1808 with the publication of a poem in honor of Fernando VII — a patriotic stance for a Mexican intellectual to take in the year of the Napoleonic invasion of Spain, and one in line with Lizardi's later proto-nationalist views.
The first three volumes slipped past the censor, as Lizardi had hoped they would in their fictionalized guise, but Lizardi's direct attack on the institution of slavery in the fourth volume was enough to have the publication stopped.

Now, in vibrant American idiom, translator David Frye captures the exuberance of Lizardi's tale-telling as the author follows his narrator and alter ego, Periquillo Sarniento, through a series of misadventures that exposes the ignorance and corruption plaguing Mexican society on the eve of the wars for independence.
