Olazabal also opened with a 70 in the 1998 Masters, but followed that with rounds of 73-71-72 to finish tied for 12th place, seven shots off Mark O'Meara's winning score.
Olazabal, of Fuenterrabia, Spain, has been going at par-5 holes in two shots while others have backed off this week, and is second in the field in putting.
