A look at the Josef Koudelka retrospective - 10-01-2003 - Radio Prague
Josef Koudelka - Photographer is a retrospective that has been conceived on a grand scale with an absolute sense for detail and perfection.
In her writings from the 1960s Mrs Farova points out that even Koudelka left photographing the theatre for other themes, he began to look for the theatrical in the world., something which is certainly embodied by the series 'Gypsies', shot between 1962 and 1970.
But, Anna Farova suggests it is essential we recognise that Josef Koudelka "does not photograph reality as it is, but as he imagines it and feels it." This might be surprising for some viewers since, at first glance, some of the photos from 'Gypsies' seem almost like documentary reportage.

 Book Reviews by Nubar Alexanian
With absolute certainty, Koudelka hits a dazzling low note with this work (in his case, think of an acoustic bass or cello, drawn with a long bow) and holds it with complete confidence right through the resolution of the note itself, which in this case is the entire length of the book.
This said, Chaos is a virtuoso performance by Koudelka, not simply because it shows us the full extent of his command and understanding of the medium of photography.
But by exhibiting his unique ability to venture far from the melody (documentary photography) without losing sight of it, he continues to define what a documentary photograph can be: a reflection so full that it is at once deeply human, richly poetic, and modestly spiritual in the broadest sense.

Koudelka is famous for how stubborn he is about showing new images, and this book isn't an exception as it is a review of the photographer's most-known bodies of work: Gypsies, Invasion 1968, Exiles, Chaos.
Let assured however, the most if not all of Koudelka's iconic images are present, and the quality of the reproduction is very high (for example, some of the photos from Exiles have much better definition and contrast than their reproduction in my copy of the revised edition published by Delpire in '97).
Considering the high prices of other books by Koudelka, this book is a bargain, and if you're new to this photographer's work, it's a great place to start.
