LABOR: Quintet in D for clarinet, violin, viola, cello, and piano, op.
Hard-luck Josef Labor (1842-1924), blind at an early age, couldn't really catch a career break, although he enjoyed the esteem of the highest musical circles in Vienna.
Labor sounds as if he's "just singing." The second movement, an allegretto, blurs the line in an intriguing way between variation and fantasia on a single idea.

There was also use of the almost free labor of prisoners in forced-labor camps and the frequent "mobilization" of communists and Komsomol members for various construction projects.
Therefore those defined as "kulaks," "kulak helpers" and later "ex-kulaks" were to be shot, placed into Gulag labor camps, or deported to remote areas of the country, depending on the charge.
It is generally agreed by historians that if famines, prison and labor camp mortality, and state terrorism (deportations and political purges) are taken into account, Stalin and his colleagues were directly or indirectly responsible for the deaths of millions.

Classics Today.com - Your Online Guide to Classical Music
Josef Labor (1842-1924) belongs to an older generation, and his quintet (he adds a viola to the above distribution of forces) adds a touch of Spohr's chromaticism to its basically Brahmsian cast.
Actually, although the notes as usual use Brahms as their point of reference, he was by no means the model that we make of him today simply because most writers aren't interested in what people actually played and heard at the time in question (the same observation applies to Wagner).
Rabl recalls Dvorák as much as Brahms, and Labor, as just mentioned, doesn't sound especially Brahmsian at all, despite the fact that the finale is a set of variations, much as in Brahms' own Clarinet Quintet.
