		Larch not only commits illegal abortions, but he is also addicted to ether, which is excused in the film as an escape from the burdens of his work.
		Throughout the film, Larch repeats the mantra that one must be "of use" to justify his existence, a theme which resonates with the National Socialist disdain of "useless eaters" and other lebensunwerten lebens ("life unworthy of life").
