 Josef Matthias Hauer
Hauer was later to write that he had learned from his father all that was essential to know about music, and learned it between the ages of five and ten.
Hauer thought instead music should arise through a composer in the most unmediated manner possible, and when he hit upon the principle of constantly and systematically circulating all twelve notes, he believed he had discovered the realm in which music could transcend the personal and attain the spiritual.
Hauer's references to Goethe's scientific writing--likely under the influence of Rudolf Steiner's interpretations--and to Chinese philosophy throughout his theoretical work also suggest that Hauer was influenced by the various esoteric and occult movements that had flourished in Vienna since the late 19th century.

The name of Hauer is more often found in text books than in concert hall programmes, and if this disc is anything to go by this neglect is hopelessly unfounded.
Perhaps it is unfortunate that Hauer is best known for his dispute with Schoenberg as to who had the idea of the twelve-tone system.
The variety of Hauer’s musical language, even within the 50 minutes of this disc, is breath-taking and ranges from the pleasant (Zwölftonspiel for flute and harpsichord) to the almost Impressionistically-lush-threatening-pre-Glassian-minimalism-at-any-moment Zwölftonspiel for string quartet (January 1957), to the capricious XXII.

In fact, his compositional techniques change almost from each piece to the next.
Wisely keeping a low profile, he stayed in Austria through the war, publishing nothing; but even after the war he published little more, although he probably wrote several hundreds of pieces which remained in manuscript.

Hauer, the American Charles Edward Ives, the Soviet composers Arthur Lourié and Nikolay Roslavets, and the Pole Józef Koffler.
The word "atonality" was derived from the French neologism "aton," coined around 1900 meaning "without tones." The word "atonality" emerged as a polemic term to describe and to condemn music in which chords were organized seemingly with no apparent coherence.
In this respect, Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg, and Anton Webern rejected the term for various reasons, although Josef Matthias Hauer used it theoretically to describe his own music.

You don't have to be a virtuoso to play Hauer, but it helps if you have a gift for nuance and a knack for phrase shaping.
Steffen Schleiermacher, of course, is a virtuoso who can play anything, and his concentrated, direct performances make every note count.
