Myslivecek was one of identical twin brothers born on 9 March 1737 in Prague.
Josef began composing in about 1760: a reported set of symphonies titled after months of the year is a myth, but he did indeed become an important symphonist, producing eighty-five examples.
Josef Myslivecek met an unfortunate end: after a brutal operation which removed his nose in attempt to "cure" his venereal disease, his earlier successes were forgotten and he died in poverty in Rome in 1781, aged forty-three.

Josef Myslivecek (March 9, 1737 - February 4, 1781) was a Czech composer in the Galant tradition.
Myslivecek's fame spread outside Italy: a number of his works were performed in Munich in the 1770s.
For the court of Portugal his operas were carefully copied out in longhand, for performances and the collection at the Ajuda library, where eighteen scores are preserved today, the largest collection anywhere.

 Josef Myslivecek - 13-06-2001 - Radio Prague
In today's edition I'll tell you about a famous 18th century Czech composer, Josef Myslivecek, who spent most of his life in Italy, known there as the ingenious 'Il Boemo' and a composer of more than 40 operas for the most popular opera houses in all the big Italian cities.
As associate professor of musicology Jarmila Gabrielova from the Philosophical faculty of Charles University told me, Myslivecek was born to a well-off family, but none of his relatives had anything to do with music.....
Myslivecek became settled down in Italy and his composing career took off.

Unless you're familiar with the trio of florid arias by Josef Myslivecek in Magdalena Kozena's recent CD of 18th-century opera selections, his name likely will elicit a wondering "Joseph who?"--but he was a leading composer of the period.
Born in Prague in 1737, Myslivecek sought his fortunes in Italy, where he made them, lost them, and died in 1781.
However, I wish that Myslivecek's colorful writing, which extends to whooping horns and perky woodwinds, had been better balanced.

Although recognized in his day primarily as a composer of opera seria, Myslivecek was also skilled at composing Italian oratorio, considered by some to be opera’s sacred counterpart.
Myslivecek originally composed Isacco for Florence, but in 1777 revised it for use as part of a commission for the 1777 Carnival season in Munich.
Isacco conforms to the conventions of Italian oratorio and opera seria with its emphasis on solo singing, ternary forms, and use of the male soprano voice.

Myslivecek promoted himself in Italy, where generally only national composers could succeed.
He won over the Italian audience with his initial opera, Bellerofonte, and at once ranked among the top Italian composers of opera seria.

Myslivecek, known in Italy as "il divino boemo," was most active as a successful composer of Italian opera.
The other two, edited from rare manuscripts in score in Vienna, probably date from somewhat later, possible from Myslivecek's visit to Munich and Vienna in 1772.
These examples from the neglected repertory of the early Classical violin concerto amply justify Mozart's admiration for their composer.

Subsequent research revealed that my growing admiration for Josef Myslivecek was shared by none less than Mozart himself who after meeting the Czech in Bologna in 1770 exclaimed, "He exudes fire, spirit and life." There is now little doubt that Myslivecek's style influenced Mozart a great deal in opera, symphonies, and violin concertos.
