Josef Suk (January 4, 1874 - May 29, 1935) was a Czech composer and violinist.

Josef Suk may be regarded as one of the greatest of Czech composers, but his music is seldom heard in the United States, where the only one of his compositions to be performed at all is his Serenade for Strings, composed when he was 18.
Suk studied at the Prague Conservatory and later taught there; he was for many years a violinist in the Czech Quartet.
Suk is a transitional figure between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: his early music was admired by Brahms, who helped arrangement its publication, but Suk lived well into the twentieth century, and in his final years one of his compositions was awarded a prize at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles.

 Musical Autobiography
Since his death his popularity has receded somewhat, but there is little doubt that despite the changing tides that often plague the posthumous reception of composers who enjoyed enormous success during their lifetimes, Schnittke's music will remain a vital part of the canon of music composed during the second half of the twentieth century.
The name may be familiar to many concertgoers because of the violinist Josef Suk, the composer's grandson, whose recordings and performances have earned him a place as one of the great violinists of the twentieth century.
Suk was also responsible for bringing Janácek to the attention of the writer Max Brod (who had written extremely laudatory essay on Suk's music).

Josef Myslivecek, like Jan Zach a Czech, was the son of a miller near Prague and he himself was first a master miller in 1761.
Unlike fellow Czech countrymen Josef Myslivecek and Jan Zach, composer and violinist Josef Suk made little use of Czech music in his compositions.
One theory is that the Serenade's four movements paint a portrait of Otylka, whom Suk had fallen in love with when she was 14 years old.

If the Sousedska was his last work, Suk died a happy man (if rather prematurely at 61) and described it as ‘the model case of a piece which poses absolutely no demands on either the composer or players’.
Suk’s playing is the epitome of refined style, virtuosic genius and genuine musicianship, and he inspires his colleagues to equally great heights (he appears on ten of the fourteen tracks).

 Suk: Chamber Music
The music of Josef Suk, pupil of Dvorák and married to the elder composer’s daughter, is only now beginning to be recognized for its true worth.
Presented here are three relatively early works, brimming with youthful enthusiasm but already showing considerable individuality, a highly developed approach to structure, and, occasionally, a touch of the melancholy introspection which was to inform many of the composer’s later works.
A talented violinist, Suk lends to his chamber compositions a true understanding of the genre, while his thoroughly ‘Czech’ musical upbringing ensures strong representation for the folk and dance influences to be found in the music of many of his contemporaries.

I think it rather a pity that the Berg was not left with its original — in both senses — coupling, the Bach Cantata from which he quoted in his Violin Concerto.
