 Josef von Sternberg
Sternberg (the "von" was added, as with his fellow Austrian Erich von Stroheim, to lend glamour to his name) was first and foremost a master cinematographer.
Whether a Sternberg film is set in a small German town or an outpost in Morocco, sunny Spain or a misty Japanese island, the Russian Imperial court or the California coast, it is part of a distinct universe.
As an apprentice filmmaker, from around 1916 to the early 1920s, Sternberg developed a lasting contempt for most of the directors and producers he worked for (an exception was Emile Chautard, who acted in some of Sternberg's films of the 1930s), and was sure that he could improve on their products.

 Josef Von Sternberg
Along with Erich von Stroheim, Sternberg was one of Hollywood's European aristocrats, and his best films reinvented the conventional modes of commercial cinema with elegant wit and sly disdain.
His career spanned several countries (his last film was made in Japan) and his ambitions were often thwarted by studio pressure, but his most famous work has a sublime consistency: the series of seven collaborations with star Marlene Dietrich, inaugurated by The Blue Angel, dignify melodramatic plots with a visual style of dazzling, decadent beauty.
Magnificent follies, perhaps - but Sternberg's insights into desire and betrayal remain as troubling and subversive as ever.
