Following Giaquinto’s departure in 1762, Bayeu gradually developed a more independent style and in 1764 was named Painter to the King by Charles III as a tribute to his work in the Palace.
He was less influenced than some of his contemporaries by Tiepolo, who arrived in Madrid shortly before Giaquinto’s departure, preferring the Roman classicism of Anton Raphael Mengs, a fellow countryman and friend of his father-in-law, Merklein.
Bayeu later executed commissions for the church of the Franciscans, as did Goya, and various other civil and religious monuments including the cathedral at Toledo.

History of Art: Neoclassicism and Romanticism - Francisco de Goya
There is, in fact, little doubt that Francisco Bayeu (1734-1795), who was soon to begin a dazzling career, was at that time Goya's principal model.
In 1762, Bayeu was called to Madrid to work with Anton Raphael Mengs, a German painter working in Spain, decorating the royal palace.
In 1773, however, he married the 26-year-old Josefa, the sister of the Bayeus, and this close relationship with the influential Bayeu family would prove to be highly advantageous to his career.

Goya | Portrait of Josefa Bayeu
In some quarters there is a dispute about whether this painting is actually of Goya's wife Josefa, or some other unidentified sitter.
Of course, Goya's skills were such that he could have easily taken an unfinished painting from an earlier period and finished it in his newer style (or entirely redid it) according to some new idea about what he wanted in the picture.
As Josefa would have been a much older womanin 1815 than what is presented in this image (the woman is perhaps in her 30s) it is within the scope of Goya's abilities to paint a younger version of his wife should he have chosen to do so.
