  Joseph Aspdin Summary
Aspdin discovered that the key to making hydraulic cement (cement that would harden when mixed with water) was roasting a mixture of clay and limestone powder in a furnace.
Joseph Aspdin (1788 20 March 1855) was a British mason, bricklayer and inventor who patented Portland cement on 21 October 1824.
In 1853 William Aspdin fled his creditors and went to Germany where he was involved with several cement works of which the last one developed as the foundation for the Alsen Group which was a large exporter to USA and also Australia prior to 1900.

 Illumination | Spring 2005
When Englishman Joseph Aspdin patented his breakthrough cement mix in 1824, he proudly dubbed it "portland" because the color of the concrete it produced reminded him of beautiful stone quarried on the Isle of Portland, a limestone peninsula in the English Channel.
Joseph Aspdin, a mason and brick layer by trade, made his mark on this distinguished history by "rediscovering" what the Romans knew: that pulverizing a controlled portion of limestone and clay together changed the chemical properties of both.
Aspdin jealously guarded the details of his process, even to the point of building 20-foot-high walls around his Wakefield, England, plant.

 Portland Cement -- Monday, Oct. 27, 1924 -- Page 1 -- TIME
It was in Leeds, England, 100 years ago, that Joseph Aspdin discovered that a new building material could be produced by mixing pulverized lime and clay in correct proportions and driving out the carbonic acid gas with heat.
Aspdin was not a chemist or scientist; and his momentous discovery was made by accidental experimentation.
Aspdin named his material "Portland cement" because of its resemblance to a type of building stone then commonly quarried on the Isle of Portland.

John Smeaton, who was assigned to rebuild the Eddystone Lighthouse in 1756, is known to be the first one to realize the chemical properties of lime.
The subsequent development was the invention of the binder called the “Roman Cement", by Joseph Parker.
Although the binder improved extensively in the following years, the “Portland” name was maintained as is. Since the binder invented by Joseph Aspdin was not baked at adequately high temperatures, it never reached the properties of today’s Portland cement.

It wasn't until the middle ages, when people like Joseph Moxon wrote about a "hidden fire in heated lime that appears upon the addition of water" that concrete again comes into focus.
The British furthered the evolution of concrete in 1824, when a Leeds bricklayer, Joseph Aspdin, invented Portland cement, so called because the resulting concrete looked to him like stone quarried on the Isle of Portland.
Aspdin, by the way, was arrested for shoveling up the "public dust" from the road.

The first major concrete users were the Egyptians in around 2,500 BC and the Romans from 300 BC The Romans found that by mixing a pink sand-like material which they obtained from Pozzuoli with their normal lime-based concretes they obtained a far stronger material.
Lime and Pozzolana concretes continued to be used intermittently for nearly two millennia before the next major development occurred in 1824 when Joseph Aspdin of Leeds took out a patent for the manufacture of Portland cement, so named because of its close resemblance to Portland stone.
The use of burning lime and pozzolan (admixture) was lost, but reintroduced in the 1300's.
