Putnam appointed Joseph Auslander, lecturer on poetry at Columbia University and poetry editor of the North American Review, as the first consultant on July 7, 1937.
Auslander, handpicked by Huntington to be the consultant with no definite term of office, was a man who came from humble means and studied at Harvard, eventually teaching at Columbia College.
Auslander’s tenure under MacLeish was marked by some turbulent times, including disagreements about establishing a poetry room.

Actually, in Auslander's time the position didn't have a set term of office.
They didn't even call it ''the poet laureate.'' They called it ''the Library of Congress consultant in poetry.'' The idea seemed to be to keep Auslander too busy consulting to write any more poetry.

Dove served two terms and in addition to exploring the African diaspora, she also encouraged children to appreciate poetry through jazz, by holding numberous events that combined music and poetry.

Anne Blackwell Payne (1887-1969) was born in Concord, N.C. She attended Flora MacDonald College and taught in the graded schools of Washington, N.C. After her mother's death, Payne moved to New York to attend Columbia University and studied poetry under Joseph Auslander.
At Columbia, Payne established several literary contacts, including Carl Van Doren and Joseph Auslander, a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet in the twenties.
Although she had been writing verse for many years, under Auslander at Columbia, Payne refined her skills in the art of song and sonnet.
