Les Preludes is the third of Liszt’s thirteen “symphonic poems” — a term he invented to describe orchestral works that do not strictly follow traditional forms, and are based on a literary or pictorial ideal.
The poem was first conceived as an overture to the composer’s 1845 choral and piano work, “Les Quatres Elements,” based on poems by Joseph Autran.
Recalling Autran’s poetry, however, the musical introduction is associated pictorially with stars, the famous heroic theme with floods, the main lyrical theme with earth, and the central stormy passage with wind.

Les Préludes ("The Fanfares") was written "after A. de Lamartine." But in the first sketches it was a setting with overture of four poems by Joseph Autran.
Each poem was for male chorus and had its own prelude, but eventually the general overture became autonomous, first as another "Méditation Symphonique" and finally Symphonic Poem #3.
