 José María Blanco White
Blanco White was always on the move, physically and spiritually, always questioning his beliefs, and always ultimately obedient to the dictates of his heart and mind, even when they required him to give up his country, church, status and privileges.
Blanco's knowledge of and acute descriptions of distinctive Spanish customs made the book an enduring sociological study of Spain at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century.
Blanco's conception of the evils of religion—the use of theology for political ends, the use of mysticism to manipulate emotion (which he called "animal affection"), the false linkage of truth and antiquity, and the false assumption that Christ came to tell people what to think rather than how to live—were well known.

H-Net Review: Karen Racine on Bello and Bolivar: Poetry and Politics in the Spanish American ...
Two years later in London and under the influence of the expatriate Spanish liberal Reverend Joseph Blanco White and the Holland House circle, Bello's poetry betrays hopes of reconciliation with Spain and a belief that Spanish America was not yet ready for independence.
Until the mid-1810s, Bello was able to sustain this increasingly tenuous position, and consistently utilized a Virgilian Georgic motif (allegories, themes of nature, and so on); after the return of Ferdinand in 1814, no one could pretend that Spanish Americans were not fighting for full independence and Bello was forced to choose sides.

Those individual qualities which give their peculiar flavour to such poems as The Haunted House and The Dream of Eugene Aram--their pervading weirdness, their occasional grotesqueness--are here sublimated and etherealised; the body of them has vanished, but the aroma remains, and the charm is complete.
White's magnificent sonnet on Night has been too often quoted for it to be necessary to reproduce it here, and so much criticised that all possible comment seems exhausted.
Few will withhold a general agreement from the verdict of Coleridge, that it is 'the most grandly conceived sonnet in the language'; but it is certainly unfortunate that the execution of so great a conception should not be more perfect.
