Joseph Burton Sumner (October 11, 1837 – February 15, 1920) was perhaps the most important figure in the founding of Sumner, Mississippi.
Sumner built the first general store and post office in the town that was later named for him in 1885, where he became the first postmaster.
Before moving to Mississippi Sumner had served in the 22nd AL Volunteer Infantry, Company A in the Confederate States of America Army and was wounded during the operations before the Battle of Stones River near Murfreesboro, Tennessee the evening of December 31, 1862.

BURTON, dentist, was born in Richmond, Va., where he lived till he was twenty-four years of age.
His brothers and sisters are among the oldest and most respectable residents of Sumner County, Kan. He was married in June, 1874, to Miss Maria Adams Prosser, who was born of wealthy parents in Calcutta, Hindostan, where her father was a merchant.
He then went to Oxford, Sumner County, and was a member of the Oxford Town Company and financial agent of the company one year.

In 1877 he came to Kansas, and located in Sumner County on a farm of 320 acres, which he improved, and ran as a grain and stock farm until 1881, at which time he went to the Nation, and herded cattle three months.

About 1900 the location of the church was changed to Sumner, and a building was erected on the west side of Cassidy Bayou between the present homes of Mrs.
Sumner has been the mother of two churches, Webb which was organized in 1908 and Friendship, organized in 1912l The present pastor has been serving the church since November, 1937.

The senator had been attempting to induce the Hannibal and St Joseph Railroad, an affiliate of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, to cross the Missouri River at Leavenworth.
His railroads were only loosely associated and in 1871 Jay Gould snatched the valuable Hannibal and St Joseph, isolating the Kansas properties from the rest of the Joy system.
A new subsidiary, the Sumner County Railroad, obtained a charter on April 5, and track reached the state line June 16, 1880.
