PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The Portland Observatory, a landmark on the city's skyline for nearly two centuries, reopened Saturday after a $1.2 million renovation project that took two years to complete.
Former Gov. Joseph E. Brennan, who grew up in the Munjoy Hill neighborhood and whose father worked on the waterfront, was among the speakers at the celebration that included band performances, a children's parade and a horn salute from ships in Portland Harbor.
The octagonal, 86-foot-tall tower was erected in 1807 by retired sea captain Lemuel Moody so that incoming ships could be spotted prior to their arrival, enabling merchants to line up docking space and stevedores to unload cargo.
