  Eichler Network: Eichler History Flashback
By the mid-1940s, Joseph Eichler had become intrigued by modernist design and in particular one of the creations of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who had designed the Bazett house (Hillsborough, California), a rented home for Eichler during World War II.
Joseph Eichler passed away in 1974 at age 73.

Eichler Houses   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Eichlers were attainable dream-houses when the first came on the market, and they're still dream-houses for those who are lucky enough to live in them, and for the hundreds who are hoping that one will go on the market so they can snap it up.
Eichler Homes, Inc., was established in 1949, and in 1959 the company expanded to Southern California by developing tracts in Orange.
Eichler homes' innovative designs were ahead of their time - not simply because of elements like "front-to-back living," atriums, or including two bathrooms in a three-bedroom house, but because these elements were included in tract houses.

 Eichler City
Eichler contemporaries are strongly identified with radiant heating, but a few other local merchant builders, notably Mackay and Coastwise, also used it, although not for long, and it's not unusual to find radiant in custom homes of the '50s and '60s.
Also in 1947 Eichler bought 45 acres of ranch land in north Sunnyvale, a transaction that was almost certainly a passing of the torch from one local giant to the next: the sellers were undoubtedly the Murphys, a famous South Bay pioneer family who gave their first names to a number of Sunnyvale's streets.
The Eichlers and other contemporaries of Mountain View are either the small and inexpensive efforts typical of the earliest years, or the large, luxurious homes of the early 1970s.

Aaron Green was retained by Joseph Eichler to prepare a Master Plan for a site in San Mateo to be identified as “The Highlands.” Eichler was a renowned developer and builder of communities of moderate-cost modern homes, whose design were largely inspired by his experience of living in a residence by Frank Lloyd Wright.
As with “The Semicircle,” the residence was entered at the upper level, which contained living room, dining, and kitchen in an open plan arrangement; the bedrooms were located upon the lower level.
Though Aaron Green’s development scheme was not executed, a client of Eichler’s came forward in 1962 and chose to build “The Sunspot” for his family in Palo Alto.

The center is built in the same spare post-and-beam style as the surrounding Eichler houses, and the center and houses share such signature architectural elements as narrow vertical wood siding, large areas of glazing held by narrow wood mullions and wide roof eaves with over-scaled, exposed rafters.
