JOSEPH ELY, farmer; P. Franklin; son of James and Hannah (Craig) Ely, was born on the farm where he now lives, Feb. 20, 1836.
Ely has 92 _ acres of the old homestead, which he bought of his father, nearly all of it in a high state of cultivation.
Joseph Ely was the son of James and Hannah Craig Ely, the grandson of Joseph and Catherine Ely, the greatgrandson of Joshua and Ann Chamberlain Ely, the great greatgrandson of John and Phebe Allison Ely.

Ely continued to reside on the homestead farm in Williams County, Ohio, until her death, on June 5, 1872.

During a lull in the thunder, the officers heard a "dull thud." As they looked around, Officer Cashin believed he saw a flicker of light coming from the interior of Kuhnie's Saloon at 1466 7th St. They went to investigate, and discovered that the saloon doors were open.
Ely abandoned his pursuit of the suspect and returned to Cashin, whom he found clutching his abdomen.
When Officer Ely returned to the scene of the shooting, he discovered evidence that a second suspect had been on the premises and made good his escape.

It retained the name of "The Ely Burying-ground" until after the death, in 1845, of Allison Ely, Jr., who left a legacy of one hundred dollars, the interest upon which was devoted to the maintenance and improvement of the grounds.
She had been a servant in the Ely family, and desired to be buried with those with whom she had so long lived.

Although my mother's maiden name was Develine, her bloodline was Ely because her father, Robert Franklin Ely, changed his name from that of his father, Thomas J. Ely, to that of his stepfather, Henry C. Develine.
We were then able to obtain a death certificate for Ben Ely from L.A. County, which showed that his father was Gideon Ely of Tennessee, and his mother was Eliza Sims of Kentucky.
A search of the Ely Family Genforum then yielded a book titled "Early Settlers of Lee County, Virginia and Adjacent Counties" Volume II by Hattie Muncy Bales.
