Johnston was quartermaster general with the rank of brigadier general when he resigned (Apr., 1861) to fight for the Confederacy.
Johnston opposed General McClellan in the Peninsular campaign until he was wounded at Fair Oaks in May, 1862.
Johnston, placed in command of the Army of the Tennessee (Dec., 1863), adopted the policy of strategic retreat against William Tecumseh Sherman in the Atlanta campaign —a policy that did not suit Davis, who appointed John Bell Hood to succeed him.

JOSEPH E. Joseph E. Johnston, the most underrated Confederate commander in either theater of the Civil War and the only man to command armies in both, was born at Farmville, Virginia, in 1807.
Johnston was made a brigadier general in the Southern army and given the command of Harper's Ferry, Virginia.
Johnston, the commander of the Army of Tennessee, never led that army in a battle on the soil of the state.

Joseph F. Smith (1838-1918) was ordained an apostle and counselor to Brigham Young at age 27 in 1866.
Joseph F. Smith's labors in the Church took a significant turn in October 1880 when, at age forty-one, he was set apart as second counselor to John Taylor in the First Presidency.
Joseph spent much of 1883 and 1884 in seclusion, and in 1885, when a warrant was issued for the arrest of the members of the First Presidency, he went into hiding in Hawaii under the assumed name of J. Speight.

Joseph Forney Johnston was born on March 23, 1843, in Lincoln County, North Carolina, where he was educated in public schools.
Johnston enlisted in the 11th Alabama Infantry Regiment but was serving as captain of 12th NC Infantry at the close of the war.
Johnston attained political, office again in 1907 when he was elected to complete the U.S. Senate term of Edmund Pettus upon the latter's death in August, 1907.

Joseph F. Smith was the son of Hyrum Smith and Mary Fielding Smith and the nephew of the Prophet Joseph Smith.

General Joseph Johnston, who succeeded Jesup, was the first West Point graduate to become head of the Quartermaster Department, but he served only ten months and left virtually no imprint upon it.
Joseph Eggelston Johnston was born at the family estate of "Cherry Grove" in Prince Edward County, Virginia, on February 3, 1807.
At the end of his term in office, Johnston continued to reside in Washington, and was appointed Commissioner of Railroads in 1885 by President Grover Cleveland.

I did not say I was persuaded by everything he said, nor would I speculate about what he might say today.
Joseph Loconte’s article “Keeping the Faith” (May) asserts correctly that “civil liberty and religious liberty must be defended together.” But it is hard to see how religious liberty can be defended by making faith-based institutions dependent on government, which, as Christians have always known, is a primary source of danger to religious freedom.
Johnston’s concerns about religious organizations becoming dependent on government are well placed.
