Zuccarini begann 1815 das Studium der Medizin an der Universität Erlangen, wo Christian Nees von Esenbeck sein Lehrer in Naturgeschichte war.
Zuccharini begann nach 1820 mit der systematischen Bearbeitung der brasilianischen Pflanzensammlungen von Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius (vor allem der Cactaceae) sowie der von Philipp Franz von Siebold in Japan gesammelten Pflanzen.
Zuccarinis Leistung besteht daneben in seinen Erkenntnissen zur Systematik und geographischen Verbreitung von Pflanzen, die er mit seinen Studien an Pflanzensippen aus dem Alpen- und Voralpengebiet gewann.

This member of the Cupressaceae is a dwarf subspecies of the plant described by Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold and Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini in 1847.
It is originally found in the southern part of Japan and on Taiwan, growing in a well drained peat with some water and some to lots of sun.

He conducted research with the cooperation of the interpreters (institutionalised by the Shogun) and Japanese students (Rangaku).
When he was expelled from Japan in 1829, he went to Leiden, where he authored Nippon in 1832 and produced his Flora Japonica in collaboration with Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini.
In a specially built glasshouse at his estate Deshima he cultivated the plants he imported from Japan to endure the Dutch climate.

It is shown here in this hand-colored lithograph by Johann Wilhelm Sigerist after De Villeneuve and Sebastian Minsinger from Philipp Franz von Siebold and Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini's Flora japonica (1835-1870), where the plant was first named for Prince Metternich in honor of his interest in rhododendrons and his patronage of horticulture.
A native of Sikkim and Nepal, it was discovered in 1849 by Sir Joseph Hooker, who named it after his traveling companion, Dr. Thomas Thomson, the superintendent of the Calcutta Botanical Gardens.
It has long been regarded as one of the best species for foliage, flowers, and adaptability, and is present in the collection here as it is in most collections.
