Camp Pendleton has noted that its existing operations are challenged by noise control advocates, in most cases representing communities that were established long after the installation was established and the operations were underway.
Camp Pendleton was declared a "permanent" installation in October 1944, and in 1946, Gen. Vandegrift stated that the base’s future role was to be the center of all West Coast activities and the home of the 1st Marine Division, the peacetime strength of which would be 12,500.
Camp Pendleton’s role as a training and replacement command was reflected in the nearly 200,000 Marines who passed through the base on their way to the Far East.

Pendleton's two Marine and bluejacket battalions eventually were used to spearhead assaults on Liberal positions at Managua and the "impregnable positions" at Coyotepe and Barranca Hill (taken in thirty-seven minutes).
Pendleton's regiment then proceeded to advance in a flying column at Guayacanas on July 3, despite poor roads, downed bridges, and continual sniper fire, and while incurring only nine casualties of his own, took the enemy positions there.

Camp Pendleton, in Virginia Beach, was established in 1912 on the Atlantic Ocean beach, just south of Rudee Inlet, as a state rifle range.
Between 1922-1942, it was renamed after the current governor of Virginia - Camp Trinkle, Camp Byrd, etc. The current name honors Major General Joseph H. Pendleton, a Virginia minister who served as a Confederate general during the Civil War.
Although a guard shack controlled access to the camp, the beach that provides one of the camp's boundaries was unfenced and open to the public so anyone could enter the facility from the east.

Seems like I noticed a Clemmons on the 1880 census for Pendleton Co. If I did, it would be in the 163 section, because that's what I was looking at.
I know I see Clemmons every once in a while when I'm searching there; it catches my eye when I scan for "Lemming." Anyway, might be worth a check:) They have a search engine that checks the whole site for you.
