  Joseph Joachim - LoveToKnow 1911
JOSEPH JOACHIM (1831-1907), German violinist and composer, was born at Kittsee, near Pressburg, on the 28th of June 1831, the son of Jewish parents.
Joachim's place in musical history as a composer can only be properly appreciated in the light of his intimate relations with Brahms, with whom he studiously refrained from putting himself into independent rivalry, and to whose work as a composer he gave the co-operation of one who might himself have ranked as a master.
There are admirable portraits of Joachim by G. Watts (1866) and by J. Sargent (1904), the latter presented to him on the 16th of May 1904, at the celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of his first appearance in England.

Joachim's dozen years at Hanover were the finest of his career: he built an international reputation as a unexcelled soloist; he founded a string quartet whose performance style and repertory set the model for later chamber ensembles; he composed most of his 56 works.
Joachim's tempos are brisker that one would expect, and there is also less portamentos than one would have anticipated; in fact, there are many fewer slides than appear to have been the norm at the time.
In June 1913 a Joachim monument was installed in the foyer of the Academy Concert Hall.

As a composer Joachim did but little in his later years, and the works of his earlier life never attained the public success which, in the opinion of many, they deserve.
The "romance" in B flat for violin and the variations for violin and orchestra are among his finest things, and the noble overture in memory of Kleist, as well as the scena for mezzo soprano frem Friedrich von Schiller's Demetrius, show a wonderful degree of skill in orchestration as well as originality of thought.
Joachim's place in musical history as a composer can only be properly appreciated in the light of his intimate relations with Brahms, with whom he studiously refrained from putting himself into independent rivalry, and to whose work as a composer he gave the cooperation of one who might himself have ranked as a master.

Joachim's rendition of his own transcription of Brahm's Hungarian Dance No.1 is perhaps the most soulful recording of the piece, the introduction reminiscent of Jan Kubelik's playing.
Joachim's bow is also not the steadiest all the time; but what is astonishing is the broad style and committment to the brief extracts the Gramophone Company allowed him to record.
Judged objectively, Joachim's technical equipment is passable (except in Brahms's second Hungarian dance) irrespective of his ripe old age, which is fairly impressive.

JOSEPH JOACHIM RAFF (1822-1882), German composer and orchestral conductor, was born near Zurich, Switzerland, on the 27th of May 1822, and educated chiefly at Schwyz.
Here, under the care of the Jesuit fathers, he soon became an excellent classical and mathematical scholar, but received scarcely any instruction in his favourite art of music, in which, nevertheless, he made extraordinary progress through sheer force of natural genius, developed by persevering study which no external obstacles could induce him to discontinue.

Emanuel Hurwitz | Obituaries | Guardian Unlimited
Hurwitz was always a natural player and found the instrument relatively easy, certainly in comparison to school work, taking up a scholarship from a friend of Bronislaw Huberman at 14 to the Royal Academy of Music, where his studies included learning with the Australian Sydney Robjohns.
This was his first introduction to the central-European, Viennese-Hungarian way of playing, as Robjohns had attended classes with the Joachim Quartet, whose leader, Joseph Joachim, had been close to Brahms and Dvorak.
The second world war interrupted Hurwitz's career with a spell in the Royal Army Medical Corps.
