Topic: Joseph Keter

Joseph Keter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Joseph Keter (born June 13, 1969) is a former Kenyan athlete, winner of 3000 m steeplechase at the 1996 Summer Olympics.
Born in Lessos, Kenya, Joseph Keter, an officer of Kenyan Army, had only one good season throughout his athletics career, which culminated with an Olympic gold medal.
After that glorious season, Keter kept running for some seasons and won the IAAF Grand Prix in 3000 m steeplechase in 1997.

Keter won with a time of 8 minutes 7.12 seconds, with Kiptanui coming in second in 8:08.33.
Kiptanui and Keter have been training together for the last year, but Friday night, instead of helping set the pace on Kiptanui's quest for that elusive Olympic championship, Keter won his unlikely gold.
Keter's best time last year was 8:09.59 and he was ranked 11th in the world, but that only made him the 10th best in Kenya, a nation with a rich reservoir of distance runners.

 Kibaki’s nightmare
As Joseph Kamotho and other refined propagandists are wont to say, Keter’s Bill is not entirely original because the indefatigable Oloo Aringo had proposed such a Bill when Kanu was in power — but that is as far as the propagandists are telling the truth.
The proposed sections 58 and 59 in Keter’s Bill are largely similar to the constitutional amendment proposed by Aringo to ensure predictability of the parliamentary calendar and the attendant independence.
Under Keter’s Bill, the Speaker or (if the Speaker declines) any MP elected by a majority of parliamentarians, shall exercise the functions of the office of President whenever that office is vacant.

The Kenyan pair reached the final water jump side by side, but then Keter slowly edged ahead to win the gold medal, with Kiptanui capturing the silver in a time of 8min 08.33sec.
Kiptanui got some small revenge over Keter 12 days later at the Weltklasse meet in Zurich, where he beat Keter by a mere 1/100 of a second with a winning time of 8min 09.85sec.
However, Keter won their next encounter at Brussels on 23 August, where Kiptanui finished third in a time of 8min 12.65sec, and it appeared that Kiptanui's five-year stranglehold over the event was finally starting to slip away.

Kiptanui does not appear to be quite the force he was in 1995, when he won the world title for the third time and five days later in Zurich not only broke the world record but achieved his ambition to become the first man to run the distance in under eight minutes - 7-59.18.
Kiptanui has seven of the eight fastest times ever, including 8-01.80 in Stockholm last month, his quickest time for two years, and seemed to be coming back to his best after a disappointing time in Atlanta where the Olympic gold went to Joseph Keter, with Kiptanui taking the silver.
