A jury continued to deliberate on Tuesday in a lawsuit by Joseph Kosma, who claims that Hermosa police officers violated his rights by shooting him four times at close range, striking him with batons and dousing him with pepper spray as they tried to arrest him.
Lawyers for the city argue that the officers performed their duties properly, and that Kosma acted negligently and "freely and voluntarily" exposed himself "to all risks of harm" by resisting the officers.
Paul Takakjian, an attorney for Kosma and a former prosecutor with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, said shortly after the incident that Kosma was trying to flee but was not trying to run over an officer.
