Joseph Lane was born ca 1769/70 (per 1850 census) in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC), presumably in the Buck Swamp region.
Joseph Lane is a proven son of Osborne Lane and Hepsabeth Crawford, and was named as such by Sellers in his book, and also named as a son in Osborne Lane's probate records.
On 13 Dec 1797 Joseph Lane and Robert Lucas witnessed a deed from John and Elizabeth Sanders to James Crawford Jr for land on Catfish.

Lane, Joseph (14 Dec. 1801-19 Apr. 1881), soldier, U.S. senator, governor of Oregon, and vice-presidential candidate, was born in a double log cabin on Beaverdam Creek, four miles north of Asheville.
Lane was a descendant of members of the noted Lane family, originally of Halifax County, who were pioneer settlers of Raleigh and Wake County.
Lane and his wife were the parents of ten children who lived to maturity: Ratliffe B., Malissa, Joseph, Simon, John, Lafayette, Roseburg, Mary, Emily, and Winifred.

Born Joe Lane in Jersey City, New Jersey, Nathan Lane took his stage name from Nathan Detroit, the character he played to great acclaim in the 1992 Broadway version of Guys and Dolls.
Lane made his film debut in 1987's Ironweed, and he spent the rest of the 1980s and early 1990s playing supporting roles in films such as Joe vs. the Volcano (1990), Frankie and Johnny (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993).
