Everyman's Library - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Everyman's Library is a series of reprinted classic literature currently published by Alfred A. Knopf (a division of Random House) in the United States, and Weidenfeld and Nicolson in the United Kingdom.
It was conceived of in 1905 by London publisher Joseph Malaby Dent, whose goal was to create a 1,000 volume library of world literature that was affordable for, and that appealed to, every kind of person, from students to the working classes to the cultural elite.
After ceasing the publication of new titles in the 1970s, Everyman's Library was relaunched internationally by Knopf in the fall of 1991, a move which was praised by many notable authors.

Dent quickly gained a reputation for fine craftsmanship; he often noted that his fine leather bindings put to shame the unattractive Victorian typography of the sheets they bound.

Joseph Malaby Dent (1849-1926) was an English bookbinder who created finely produced classics by Shakespeare, Scott, Dickens and Jane Austen.
Joseph Malaby Dent was born in Darlington in 1849.
Dent, largely self-educated, had firm ideas of what books were proper to publish and, indeed, how they should appear: neat and legible, printed on decent paper and handsomely presented in firm, bevelled cloth boards, in coveniently small format, in fact all that was sound and sensible, but attractive as well.

Migrating to AL at the same time was an Aldridge Malaby, but I do not think that he was my Mary's father as he was listed in a different household in the 1850 census and he was too old to be her brother (an uncle possibly)...
Other than Mary's brothers and sisters, the only other Malaby that I have found records on in Blount Co, AL was a Charles Malaby who married a Mary Sterling...
There are no Malabys left in that area of AL now and haven't been since shortly after the civil war...

The Everyman's Library was revived in 1991 and is now published under the auspices of Random House's Knopf imprint (as such, Everyman's Library editions are Borzoi Books), but the project was conceived in 1905 by Joseph Malaby Dent of J.M. Dent and Co., a British publishing house specializing in inexpensive books for the working class.
Since no royalties needed to be paid on the copyright-free classics, the publishers made more on each book; the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth saw a minor blossoming of these collections of great literature well before the arrival of serious paperbacks in the form of Penguin and Pocket Books.
Joseph Dent's "Temple" edition of Shakespeare arrived in 1894; the Oxford World Classics in 1901; the Loeb Classical Library in 1911.

Dent envisioned a balanced selection of classics and other worthy books, from the popular to the specialized: his master purpose was to build up the perfect library, "the most complete library for the common man the world has ever seen"--a project that became the ruling passion of his life.
At that time, inexpensive editions were rare, and it was indeed a boon to be able to buy, one at a time, a number of famous books that were more often talked about than read.
By the end of 1910, 500 volumes had been issued, and within Dent's lifetime, Everyman had become the fullest and most prestigious series of the world's classics available in the English language, with writings from Aeschylus to Zola.

Among publishers, the palm must go to Joseph Malaby Dent, the founder of Everyman's Library.
Born in Darlington in 1849, and raised by his house-painter father to recognise that great books were an 'engine of equality', Dent dreamed of publishing a thousand cheap classics, with an emphasis on English, Greek and Roman authors.
Dent's relationship with his editor, Ernest Rhys, who had taught Plato and Shelley to the miners alongside whom he had worked as an engineer, made the Everyman dream come true.
