Austrian composer Joseph Marx (1882-1964) stayed loyal to his late-Romantic aesthetic for his entire long life, winning acclaim from conservative audiences in the first part of the 20th century and vanishing almost without a trace immediately thereafter.
Marx evidently had absolutely no sense of timing whatsoever in this "free form" medium (at least in comparison with the comparatively strictly structured Piano Concerto).
The tone poems of Joseph Suk, for example, composed in exactly the same period and in a very similar late-Romantic idiom, show much the same level of textural complexity and surface sheen, married to vastly better formal control.

Recently I've been exploring the music of Joseph Marx (1882-1964) after being stunned at the beauty of his recently recorded 'Nature Trilogy.' It turns out that ASV is issuing a series of CDs containing Marx's music.
Marx was an indefatigable critic of the Second Viennese School (Schönberg, Berg, Webern) and yet the harmonies used here are almost indistinguishable from the hyperchromatism of Schönberg's early 'Verklärte Nacht' or 'Gurre-Lieder,' when he breeches the bounds of conventional Romantic harmony.
Marx orchestrated both the 2nd and 3rd quartets for string orchestra and I'd love to hear those versions.

Composer, critic, teacher, and administrator, Marx and his music vanished under the wave of atonal academicism that swept across Europe and the US in the mid-20th century.
The irregular phrasing of the opening two lines in the Venetianisches Wiegenlied lend his fresh melody distinction, while the harmonically evasive orchestral conclusion of Jugend und Alter is among the most imaginative touches on the CD.
Whatever the distinctive characteristics (in the original German) possessed by the various Romantic poets Marx chose, this creates a sameness of musical mood that is only emphasized by the melodic directness and relatively short length of under two minutes common to most of these songs.
