 Joseph McDowell (General) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Joseph McDowell (1758–1799) was an American lawyer, soldier, and statesman from Morganton, North Carolina.
He was a general of the state's militia during the Revolutionary War, and later served in the U.S. Congress from 1793 to 1795.
His cousin, Joseph McDowell also served in the congress.

Charles Manly McDowell (1862 - 1921), son of James Charles Sheffield McDowell (1831 - 1863) and Julia Manly McDowell, daughter of Governor Charles Manly, was born at Quaker Meadows Plantation in Burke County, North Carolina on August 9, 1861.
Both the McDowells and the Manlys from whom he was descended were prominently and actively identified with the affairs of North Carolina during and after the Revolutionary War.
Ephriam McDowell was descended from Somerled (or Somervil), Lord of the Isles, then from his son Dougall who founded the Clan of Dougall or MacDougal, one of the eldest of the fifty-two Highland Clans proper.

Joseph McDowell's home was at the family plantation known as "Quaker Meadows." He grew up there and later served in many Revolutionary War battles under the watchful eye of his older brother Charles.
Joseph was born on June 17, 1746, one of seven sons, all of whom served in the Revolutionary War.

John Lewis, a relative of Ephraim McDowell, had left Ireland some years before, and about 1732 settled on the Middle River in the Shenandoah Valley, in what was known as Beverly Manor, near the present town of Stanton, where he obtained patents for a large tract of land.
In consideration of a liberal share of the claim, the McDowells and James Greenlee then undertook to assist in carrying out Borden’s contract for him, and before the close of the year moved their own families to the grant, where they per-manently settled, being the first white settlers in that part of the valley.
On this summit Furgason was posted, Major Joseph McDowell, Colonel Lewis and Major Winston formed the right wing, Campbell and Shelby the centre, and Colonel Cleveland and Colonel Williams on the left.
