  Joseph McKenna - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Joseph McKenna (August 10, 1843–November 21, 1926) was an American politician who served in all three branches of the U.S. federal government, as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, as U.S. Attorney General and as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.
McKenna resigned from the Court in January 1925 at the suggestion of Chief Justice Taft.
McKenna's ability to perform his duties had been diminished significantly by a stroke suffered ten years earlier, and by the end of his tenure McKenna could not be counted on to write coherent opinions.

McKenna was enrolled in a local parochial school, until his family decided to relocate in order to escape anti-Irish-Catholic violence and hostility and economic insecurity.
McKenna continued studying at parochial schools, and took courses in law at the Benicia Collegiate Institute.

William Joseph McKenna pursued his education in St. John’s parochial school and in the Hillhouse high school, after which he took up the study of stenography in a business college.
He became quite proficient along that line and accepted a position of that kind but regarded this merely as an initial step to other professional labor, for it was an expedient whereby he might provide for his own support while preparing for the bar.

He was elected to the legislature for Chatham in 1982 and was chosen leader of the provincial Liberal Party in May 1985.

McKenna had also served as a judge of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and as a member of Congress.
Although anti-Catholic sentiment of the 1880s was a factor in McKenna's defeat in his first two runs for Congress, such attitudes were apparently not in play in his confirmation to the court.

In Washington nine men in solemn fl robes met after a two weeks' recess to hand down weighty decisions; then, as they adjourned in honor of once fiery Joseph McKenna, their robes seemed to take on an even fler shade.
All of them, save the youngest (Harlan Fiske Stone), had sat on the Supreme Court bench with Justice McKenna.
