President Joseph Garcia announced Feb. 9 that the University will receive a $1 million endowment to fund scholarships for students from low-income or working class families, first generation college students, non-traditional students, and students from traditionally underrepresented groups thanks to the estate of Helen McLoraine.
President Joseph Garcia was tagged by Gov. Bill Ritter as a co-chairman of the Governor's P-20 Education Coordinating Council along with cobusinessman Bruce Benson and Lt. Gov.
Former and current students of Southern Colorado Junior College, Pueblo Junior College, Southern Colorado State College, the University of Southern Colorado, and Colorado State University-Pueblo are encouraged to return to campus Oct. 8-13 for a variety of activities, planned both by students and the Alumni Association.

  Hispanic Americans in Congress -- Montoya
In 1957 Montoya was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in a special election after the sudden death of the recently reelected New Mexican Congressman Antonio Manuel Fernández.
Montoya won the 1964 Senate election to complete the term of Dennis Chávez, who died in office, despite the fact the Governor of New Mexico, Edwin L. Mechem, had resigned the governorship in order fill the seat temporarily.
In 1976 Montoya was defeated by Harrison Schmitt, a former astronaut.

The Montoya brothers were involved in a fight at the party and left on foot.

Joseph Montoya, a New Mexico State University physics doctoral student, will present his research on non-linear optics at the national conference for the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) Oct. 7-10 in Portland, Ore.
Montoya, who has a fellowship from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, said his work with silver aggregate and laser radiation could eventually be used to combat air pollutants.

The nitrogen-fixation rates reported in Montoya’s study are conservative figures, according to the paper.
With funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Montoya first began this research five years ago with colleague Jonathan Zehr, a professor of molecular biology at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and one of the authors on this Nature paper.
