Born on September 15, 1911 in New York City, American filmmaker JosephPevney first entered show business as a 13-year-old vaudevillian entertainer, which eventually led to his becoming a nightclub performer and actor on Broadway.
Pevney entered Hollywood in the mid-1940s where he appeared in several minor noir films, such as Nocturne (1946), Robert Rossen's Body and Soul (1947) with John Garfield, Street With No Name (1948), and Thieves' Highway (1949).
By the early 1950s, Pevney had become a full-time director noted for his competently managed action and adventure films for Universal Studios.
Pevney all but makes it plain, in a two-shot of the husband lying in the foreground and the wife seated behind him, whom the conversation concerns.
Pevney stays on her two-shot with Segal as they face each other just before beginning their affair, leaving her hand out of frame on his line, “why are you twisting the ring on your finger like it was burning a hole,” etc.
A film actor who has long since left the business to practice law defends his son on a charge of murder.
Prolific director JosephPevney is better known for his next venture -- the Star Trek television series -- than this conventional docudrama on mobster "Dutch" Schultz (played by Vic Morrow).
Rather than take the focus of 1997's Hoodlum, in which Schultz's attempt to move into Harlem is thwarted, the events leading to the demise of the nearly illiterate, Bronx-born, "king of beer" are stressed.
To the credit of the director, the repugnant Schultz (whose real name was Arthur Flegenheimer) is not romanticized, even though the legend of his "buried treasure" and the literary non-sequitur of his famous, 1935 deathbed ramblings would tend to lure anyone into digressions.

On the discovery of Richard Conte, one legend has it that while working as a restaurant waiter in a Connecticut lodge turned summer theater, Conte was spotted by director JosephPevney when one of the actors in his play walked off the job.
Desperate to fill the role, Joe Pevney convinced the owner of the lodge, Conte's employer, that he needed the waiter for the part of a wrongly accused man. He then had the lodge owner threaten Richard Conte with termination if he didn't help out.
This film is one of the more interesting in the noir canon, due in part to it's strong story driven plot and excellent dialogue typical of the work of Joseph L. Mankiewicz.

JosephPevney may not be the first name that one thinks of in terms of record-breaking movies, but the actor-turned-director -- who had a pretty considerable stage career before turning exclusively to the movies in the second half of the 1940s -- was responsible for some of the highest-grossing movies in the first four decade...
