Joseph Prestwich - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Joseph Prestwich (12 March 1812–June 23, 1896) was a British geologist and businessman, known as an expert on the Tertiary Period and for having confirmed the findings of Boucher de Perthes.
Prestwich's report on the matter was published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society for 1859-1860: It is claimed by some authorities that this publication marks the birth of modern scientific archaeology.
Prestwich was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1853 and knighted in 1896: He married Grace Anne McCall in 1870.

 Joseph Prestwich Correspondence
It was printed by the Clarendon Press and informed me that Prestwich had an M.A. degree and had been a Fellow of both the Royal and Geological Societies.
As I carefully skimmed the book (it really is in terrible condition), I recognized many of the drawings and realized that Prestwich had first intended his text to be a series of discrete letters, perhaps based on his lectures, quite an imaginative pedagogical approach.
I take great pleasure in dedicating this effort both to the memory of Professor Joseph Prestwich and to two likely Scots lads, Norman Drummond and Ian Chisholm, both of whom need to appreciate the profound and fundamental significance of rocks in their lives.

 Prestwich Coat of Arms
Prestwich is a name whose history is connected to the ancient Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain.
The place names Prestwick and Prestwich have an identical etymology; they are derived from the Old English words preost, which meant priest, and wic, which meant farm.
First found in Lancashire where they were seated from early times and their first records appeared on the census rolls taken by the ancient Kings of Britain to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects.

The La Brea Tar Pits as Evidence of a Worldwide Flood
Prestwich believed that the submergence of the European continent was short in duration, since there was an absence of marine sedimentation.
Prestwich underestimated the longevity of uniformitarianism, yet he was right in attacking its "unphilosophical" approach to science.
Prestwich would have recognized here a correlation with his date of the flooding of Europe, which he believed took place sometime between the end of the Ice Age and the beginning of the Recent Period or 10,000 years ago.

Prestwich, [Sir] Joseph,.- On the Evidences of a Submergence of Western Europe, and of the Mediterranean Coasts, at the Close of the Glacial or So-Called Post-Glacial Period, and Immediately Preceding the Neolithic or Recent Period.
Inscribed in ink on front cover, "From the author." An important late paper by Joseph Prestwich (1812—1896), one of the great English geological scientists of the nineteenth century, primarily an amateur, in the tradition of Darwin, Priestly et al.
The paper synthesizes many of the ideas developed over Prestwich's career, by his interest in glaciation, sub-stratal water, rubble-drift, etc. In it he proves that England and western Europe to the Mediterranean coast were submerged in the post-Glacial period up to the Neolithic and Recent era.

 Archaeology - LoveToKnow 1911
The controversy as to the human character has been very keen, some alleging that the fractured edges and even the definite and fairly constant types are entirely produced by natural forces.
Sir Joseph Prestwich in England, and Alfred Rutot in Belgium, the latter arguing from his own discoveries in that country, have strongly supported the artificial character of the relics.
It is to be regretted that the conditions are not more convincing, for, as stated above, they agree fairly well with the evolution theory of man's handiwork, and if they could be accepted, would carry back the evidences to a more remote time when the physical features of Kent were of a very different character.

Early conviction that Boucher de Perthes had made a significant discovery was (on the English side at least) replaced by skepticism when Prestwich and Evans announced that some of the stone artifacts recovered from the site were fakes.
This event took place on 9 May 1863 and was attended by most of the disputants (with the exception of Boucher de Perthes).
Evans arranged for Henry Keeping (the excavator of Brixham Cave) to visit the site (between 3 June and 6 June), and his assessment, reported by Evans and supported by Evans’s continued analysis of the previously excavated tools, was highly negative.
