  Joseph Ritson - LoveToKnow 1911
JOSEPH RITSON (1752-1803), English antiquary, was born at Stockton-on-Tees, of a Westmorland yeoman family, on the 2nd of October 1752.
In nearly all the small points with which he dealt Ritson was in the right, and his corrections have since been adopted, but the unjustly bitter language of his criticisms roused great anger at the time, much, it would appear, to Ritson's delight.
As early as 1796 Ritson showed signs of mental collapse, and on the loth of September 1803 he became completely insane, barricaded himself in his chambers at Gray's Inn, made a bonfire of manuscripts, and was finally forcibly removed to Hoxton, where he died on the 23rd of the month.

Joseph Ritson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Joseph Ritson (October 2, 1752 - September 23, 1803), was an English antiquary.
Ritson spared no pains himself to ensure accuracy in the texts of old songs, ballads and metrical romances which he edited.
As early as 1796, Ritson showed signs of mental collapse, and on September 10 1803 he became completely insane, barricaded himself in his chambers at Gray's Inn, made a bonfire of manuscripts, and was finally forcibly removed to Hoxton, where he died.

Ritson went to Paris, where he was in full sympathy with the French Revolutionary leaders.
Ritson finally went completely insane, and died of 'paralysis of the brain'.

 October 2nd
Ritson was born October 2, 1752, at Stocktonupon-Tees, Durham, and was bred to the legal profession; he ultimately came to London, entered Gray's Inn, and was called to the bar by the society there in 1789.
Percy desired to make his work popular, an object in which he certainly succeeded, but Ritson's attacks embittered his triumph; and were carried by the antiquary so far, as to heedlessly annoy the worthy prelate, for he ultimately denied the existence of the manuscript from which Percy professed to obtain his originals.
Ritson had no patience for looseness of diction or assertion; and an amusing anecdote of this is given by Sir Walter Scott, who was intimate with him.

 Ritson Family Crest
The name Ritson was brought to England in the great wave of migration following the Norman Conquest of 1066.
In continental Europe, the most ancient recorded family crest was discovered upon the monumental effigy of a Count of Wasserburg in the church of St. Emeran, at Ratisobon, Germany...
In the Ritson coat of arms as in all coat of arms the crest is only one element of the full armorial achievement.

Joseph Ritson (1752-1803), antiquary, vegetarian, conveyancer, barrister, political radicalist, and eventual psychotic, is best remembered for his work in the field of literature, particularly popular poetry, and his vicious criticism of his scholarly contemporaries.
As a long-time avid student of historical poetry, his criticisms were nearly always valid and founded upon extensive knowledge and research, yet the insulting and bitter tones of his writing made him intensely unpopular among his peers.

And although many of the writers were opposed to Ritson's radical politics, their Robins also fought tyranny -- Norman tyranny in particular.

So at the present time no one knows just where old Ritson’s grave is, only that within that vast enclosure where so many thousand souls sleep their last sleep the dust of the famous ballad-lover lies fast asleep in the bosom of mother earth.
It was his misfortune that Ritson quarreled with everybody.
Yet Ritson was a scrupulously honest man; he was so vulgarly sturdy in his honesty that he would make all folk tell the truth even though the truth were of such a character as to bring the blush of shame to the devil’s hardened cheek.

 Legend of Robin Hood
Robin Hood Garlands containing between 16 and 28 Robin Hood songs were larger and more expensive than the ordinary chapbook and of the many Garlands produced between 1660 and 1830 no attempt was made to change the words and bring the ballads up to date.
An acquaintance of Dr. Johnson and friend of Sir Walter Scott, Ritson was noted for his high critical standards and his book was a triumph in popularising the study of Robin Hood and turning the greenwood legend into an ideological hero.
based on Ritson's book, was a huge success and ensured the fame of Robin Hood and Friar Tuck for the rest of the 19th century.
