Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible - Free net encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Although it is certain that Smith took Hebrew, Greek and German lessons in Kirtland, Ohio as early as 1833, the "translation" is rather a purportedly inspired "rendering" or "restoration" of the Bible to its original or intended meaning.
Smith's work on the volume took place from about 1830 until Smith's death in 1844 when he was preparing the manuscript for publication.
Smith relied on a version of the Bible that included the Apocrypha, and marked off the Bible as verses were examined (the Apocrypha was not translated).

Joseph Smith Translation (JST) of the Bible
Joseph Smith often used the words "translated" and "translation," not in the narrow sense alone of rendering a text from one language into another, but in the wider senses of "transmission," having reference to copying, editing, adding to, taking from, rephrasing, and interpreting.
Joseph Smith called it the "new translation," and it is known by this title in the early literature of the Church.
The JST emphasizes that the gospel of Jesus Christ was taught in the earliest ages of mankind.

Examining Joseph Smith's New Translation of the Bible - Condensed Version
In light of Joseph Smith’s statements regarding the supposed corruptness of the existing Scriptures, it is easy to see why he saw his work in bringing forth a new translation as extremely significant.
Joseph claimed to get revelations from God, and recorded multiple references to both the revelations he received and the time he spent working on the text of the revision.
In light of the claims made by Smith, the JST was nothing less than the result of direct revelation from God and resulted in the Scriptures being restored to how they read in the original manuscripts.

Joseph Smith's teaching that "Eloheim is from Eloi, God, in the singular number" further illustrates his unfamiliarity with the Hebrew language.
Joseph Smith's claim that the word 'Elohim in Genesis 1:1, having a plural ending indicates that there are many gods is completely without merit.

In view of Joseph Smith's revelatory experience, it was natural that he should seek more light relative to the biblical text, especially as he came to realize the inadequacy of the available versions.
As concerning the manner of translation and correction, it is evident, from the manuscripts and the testimony of those who were conversant with the facts, that it was done by direct revelation from God.

Joseph Smith's translation of the Gospel of Matthew offers additional insights into three major themes of the book: (1) Matthew as the Gospel of the Church, (2) Jesus' criticism of Judaism, and (3) Jesus as the fulfillment of God's promise to Israel.
First, the Joseph Smith translation of Matthew emphasizes the need for commandments within the community of Christians, the cost of discipleship, and the importance of coming to Christ through ordinances as well as attitude.
The translation expressly contrasts their pride and pretension with the simple spiritual message delivered to the disciples—a message that could only be understood by the Spirit through prayer.

Smith's insertion parallel's that of Martin Luther's 1528 translation of the Bible.
If this is a correct translation of Romans 4:4, then it would seem that all of mankind is lost, for as Romans 3:10 clearly states, "As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one." By the way, Smith left Romans 3:10 intact.

It is interesting to note that even though the original Joseph Smith Papyri had been found, leaders of the Mormon Church seemed to have had no desire to produce a translation of the papyri for their people.
Since the Joseph Smith Papyri were rediscovered and translated by Egyptologists, a number of prominent Mormon scholars seem to have been living in a fantasyland with regard to the Book of Abraham.
The rediscovery of the Joseph Smith Papyri shows that the head was missing on the original papyrus, and it is clear that Joseph Smith made an imaginative restoration which is incorrect.

 Luke 4
The Joseph Smith Translation corrects this by saying, ‘And after forty days, the devil came unto him, to tempt him’ ([Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible].
First, his purpose for going there was not to seek out the devil, but to commune with God; second, he was not tempted for the forty days, but after the forty days were over; and third, it was the Spirit of God, not the devil, who conveyed Jesus to the mountain and the pinnacle.
The Joseph Smith Translation account is also more reasonable than that of the King James Version, for one would not fast and seek solitude in order to be tempted of the devil, but would do so to commune with God.” (Robert J. Matthews, Behold the Messiah [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1994], 188.)
