Joseph Spence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Joseph Spence (born August, 1910 in Andros, Bahamas - died March 18, 1984 in Nassau, Bahamas) was a Bahamanian guitarist, singer and blues musician.
Several modern folk, blues and jazz musicians, including Taj Mahal, Ry Cooder, Woody Mann and John Renbourn were influenced by and have recorded variations of his arrangements of gospel and Bahamanian pop tunes.
The earliest recordings of Joseph Spence were field recordings by folk musicologists such as Sam Charters.

The Nassau Guardian - Joseph Spence: Unforgotton legend
Joseph Spence managed this feat through no feigned gesture, but simply by living the life he was born to live and sharing his God given talent.
The genius of Joseph Spence was reflected in the many artists, producers and folklorists who engaged in cultural pilgrimages to lay eyes on him and bear witness to his signature ground-breaking guitar style.
Spence, as he was endearingly called by his siblings, his wife and inevitably everyone who came to know him, was raised with his sister and four half-brothers.

The Guitar Stylings of Joseph Spence, taught by Elijah Wald
I saw Joseph Spence only once, when I was about 12, and I can't say I remember very much about that particular concert, but I have been listening to his music as long as I can remember, and he has always been one of my favorite musicians.
Spence was clearly relaxed and in a good mood, and there is some wonderful playing and singing, as well as an interesting interview segment about his various playing styles.
Spence's recordings are among my favorite music on earth, but some of the later ones do not show him at his best.

His sound is as lowdown as the Delta blues, but it's set to joyful island beats -- the sacred and the profane, the light and the dark, all of it borne along on a current of rum and laughter.
Spence is known for his giant but laid-back personality; his unself-consciously dazzling, contrapuntal guitar work (Ry Cooder's a fan); and for being one of the oddest, most wonderful vocalists ever.

The combination of Spence's voice and guitar is one of music's most unforgettable.
To continue the previous classical piano analogy, the plotting of Spence's guitar performances is a bit like Brahm's, the melodies plowing forward into their determined destination like the pounding of the surf.

Spence asked how better informed individuals on a market can credibly transmit, "signal", their information to less informed individuals, so as to avoid some of the problems associated with adverse selection.

In addition to his research on signaling, Spence was a forerunner in applying the results and insights of the 1996 economics laureates, Vickrey and Mirrlees, to the analysis of insurance markets.

Bahamanian guitarist/singer Joseph Spence is the kind of hidden treasure blues and folk purists dream of.
Though his playing is based on traditional blues, Spence employs an idiosyncratic style replete with syncopated phrasing, sliding bass ostinatos, and rhythmic vamps all woven together with a fluid finger-picking technique.
In addition, Spence's accompanies himself with a string of gutteral growls and grunts, and a monstrous-sounding, smile-inducing, dancing scat.

Reggae & Caribbean JOSEPH SPENCE World Music at Global Rhythm - The Destination for World Music
Discovered by folklorist Samuel Charters on Andros Island in the Bahamas in 1958, at which time these nine songs were recorded, Spence's solo acoustic guitar playing and repertoire owed less to his native surroundings than to the finger-picked blues and gospel of the American South.
All of which would be commendable in itself even if Spence had not possessed one of the most startling vocal styles ever committed to tape, somewhere on the cusp between Tom Waits, Howlin' Wolf and Popeye The Sailor.
