John Joseph Sweeney 1934–, U.S. labor leader, b.
In 1995 he led dissatisfied labor leaders who challenged American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations president Lane Kirkland.
After Kirkland resigned, Sweeney defeated Thomas Donahue, who had been appointed interim president, for the presidency of the AFL-CIO in the first contested such election in the organization's history.

Philip, who lives in San Antonio, TX was in Hawaii for the wedding of his niece at the Mystical Rose Oratory.
While touring the campus, he fondly recalled his early days on Oahu when he served as an altar boy for Bishop Joseph Sweeney, at Our Lady of Peace; his first year of study at Chaminade in 1957 when the college went co-ed; and most vividly (and with good humor) echoed the words of Fr.
Stephen Tutas, his Metaphysics instructor: “Your words are diarrhea and your thoughts constipated.” Philip is hoping to attend the 40th reunion of the class of 1963 and the Chaminade classes of 1959-1962, on Saturday, August 9, 2003.
