Volpe was elected to the Canadian House of Commons in the 1988 federal election in the Toronto riding of Eglinton—Lawrence.
Volpe supported Paul Martin's bid for the Liberal Party leadership in 1990, and was for many years a leading Martin supporter in Toronto.
Volpe considered this a slur against Italian-Canadians such as himself, despite the fact that the two key figures in the poster, Prime Minister Paul Martin and former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien are not Italian.

Volpe was appointed assistant manager by then general manager Anthony A. Bliss in 1981 and served in that capacity for ten years.

Volpe's abilities in the technical and production areas were recognized quickly, and he became the company's master carpenter in 1966 and was named technical director in 1978, working closely with John Dexter, then the Met's director of production.
Volpe has also increased the number of operas in the repertory and reduced the number of repeat operas from prior seasons in order to keep the repertory fresh and varied.
Volpe is married to Jean Anderson Volpe, a former ballet dancer, and resides in Manhattan.

Volpe's direction a house esthetic has emerged that can best be described as "disposable"- new productions are artless placeholders that merely allow the Met to stage a performance of a particular opera.
Volpe is directly responsible for this debacle because of his meddlesome micromanagement and overzealous beancounting.
Volpe retires, sometime early in the next century, he will certainly be lauded for increasing the Met's endowment, for introducing Met Titles, for expanding the active repertory, for luring Valery Gergiev to the house, and for trying to increase the number of operas done each season.

Gelb, 51, who was the executive producer of the Met's television programs and responsible for its radio broadcasts from 1987 to 1993, will work with Volpe for a transitional year beginning in August and then will assume full responsibilities when Volpe retires in the summer of 2006.
