Charlie Haden - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Haden is also known for his signature lyrical bass lines and is one of the most respected jazz bassists and jazz composers today.
Haden was born in Iowa, and raised in a musical family, which often performed together on the radio playing country music and American folk songs.
Haden made his professional debut as a singer when he was two years old, and continued singing with his family until he contracted a mild form of polio when he was 14.

Charlie Haden   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
This spring, the jazz bassist, composer, and bandleader Charlie Haden is everywhere.
The approach has made Haden popular (both the Jones and Metheny projects were chart toppers, and the Barron CD will certainly get there) even if he does draw the occasional critical jibe for diving headlong into nostalgia and veering too close to easy listening.
Haden's reputation as an accompanist goes back to his Ornette Coleman days, where he was able to adapt the "free" jazz imperatives of Ornette's music to his instrument.

Spain: Spirituals: The Best of Spain - PopMatters Music Review
Son of jazz bassist Charlie Haden and brother of left coast musical luminary and indie hipster Petra Haden, there is no question that Josh Haden's musical family tree alone makes him a subject of curious interest.
The pleasant surprise is that Josh's compositions stand on their own merit and frame him as a pensive and gifted songwriter who leans heavily on the jazz, blues, and chamber pop genres as the vehicles for his moody compositions.
Under Haden's leadership his bandmates seem to hold firm that the album versions of the songs are the true ones, and thus must be represented in a live venue.

Music: King Of Spain (May 16 - May 22, 1996)
Haden tells me older people identify with Spain's music as well and that "they're surprised such a young guy could write songs they really like." One listen to Blue Moods and the band's wide- ranging appeal makes sense.
Haden's vocals recall the breathy southern sound of Palace while the music's spare mix of guitar, bass and drums brings to mind elements of soul, blues and jazz without ever really sounding like any of them.
While the country and jazz influences are self-evident (Josh's father, bassist Charlie Haden, gained recognition for bringing the rural country music of his youth to jazz), Haden does see some validity in the frequent comparisons to the Velvet Underground.

And giving the project a sense of closure, while commenting obliquely on the generational dialogue it represents, is the luminous "Spiritual" (composed by Haden's son, Josh), an instrumental prayer that exemplifies the balance of concision and deep emotion at the heart of this exquisite triumph.
Haden is straight forward and simple and always interesting - he's one of the very few bass players who realizes that a lovely tune just needs to be played, and nothing more.

What keeps these 10 songs interesting is the dancing cadences of Haden’s breathy voice and his sense of harmony, which means even a two-note electric-guitar riff like the one that keeps surfacing in the verses of " She Haunts My Dreams " brings a textural richness to his spare arrangements.

Haden's voice, sometimes rising barely above a whisper, has the chunky heft of Lenny Kravitz, the compressed exuberance of Adam Duritz ("Spiritual"), and a numinous hint of special knowledge glimpsed just around the corner like Luna's Dean Wareham ("Untitled #1").
But Haden isn't the whole story: virtually every song has a memorable, tangy, arpeggio-based electric guitar figure, simple but precise and perfect, giving internal motion and momentum to songs otherwise dominated by the Ent-like languor of Haden's vocals.

Yes, it's disingenuous to evaluate an album on such superficial grounds, but the handful of us who've followed the slow rise (and amicable demise) of the ethereal pop outfit have grown used to seeing semi-clad, pouty young women on the cover, only vaguely hinting at the lovely simplicity held within.
Similarly, Haden's music is a departure from past efforts, forsaking drums for the type of rudimentary synth grooves usually reserved for demos.
Melodically, this album resembles old slave spirituals augmented by acoustic guitars and a Wurlitzer, which more than compensate for the drum machine's cold comfort, and Haden's voice - one that rivals Jeff Buckley's in seductiveness but tonally is more reminiscent of Nick Drake's.
