Joshua Bell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bell began taking violin lessons at the age of four when his mother discovered her son had taken rubber bands from around the house and stretched them across the handles of his dresser drawer and was plucking out music he had heard her play on the piano.
Bell studied as a boy first under Mimi Zweig, then switched to Josef Gingold after assurances from Bell's parents that they were not interested in pushing their son in the study of the violin but simply wanted him to have the best teacher for their son's abilities.
Bell's instrument is a 300-year-old Stradivarius violin called the Gibson ex Hubermann, which was made in 1713 during what is known as Antonio Stradivari's "Golden Era." This particular instrument has a unique history as it was stolen twice; the last time the owner confessed to the theft on his deathbed.

classical music - andante - joshua bell
Grabbing the public eye is of course only the beginning of the story, the initiation of a barrage of struggles; in the intensely competitive prodigy-producing frenzy of recent years, cautionary tales of transient glory run rife.
Joshua Bell is the rare musician who has survived the dangerous chrysalis of premature fame — his Philadelphia Orchestra debut came at 14, ten years after he first began practicing on a 1/16th-size instrument — to emerge with grace as a fully adult artist.
Needless to say, the tension between commerce and art is a constant throughout history, but its current manifestations can be seen in a uniquely threatening light: the demise of the classical record industry, the indifference to new music, and the endless concoction of "crossover" projects that haven't done much to bolster anyone's cause.

Joshua Bell: West Side Story Suite from Central Park
Bernstein's own New York Philharmonic Orchestra and guest artists violinist Joshua Bell and Broadway soprano Kristin Chenoweth performed before an enthused audience of 50,000 people in the evening glow of the city's famous skyline.
An arrangement for violin was approved by Bernstein himself before his death in 1990; Brohn was in fact chosen by Sid Ramin, Bernstein's orchestrator for the original score.
And certainly, Bernstein would have approved of how Joshua Bell - the most celebrated of today's American-born violinists, and the New York Philharmonic - with William Eddins in his conducting debut with the orchestra, elevated his Broadway musical to a genuine concert piece.
