Joshua Homme is comfortable this way, stretched out deep in the California desert, sitting in the back of a tour bus with a bottle of chilled vodka and a steady supply of borrowed smokes.
But Homme felt a breakthrough with the quieter, contemplative “Long Slow Goodbye” and “I Never Came,” which is a typical Queens half-serious/half-dumb song title that hardly masks a tune that is emotionally vivid and filled with regret, even if the lyrics are not always clear.

Unfortunately, Homme, who has thus far managed to keep his various musical endeavors distinct and unique, appears to have allowed some of the less-refined, less-lively jams from his Desert Sessions to seep into the usually driving Queens.

Rated R found the band experimenting with a more relaxed sound that was less riff-oriented than its predecessor, the self-titled Queens of the Stone Age.
With the exception of the last track, entitled "I Think I Lost My Headache", the band abandoned their previous 'robot rock' style (so dubbed by their frontman Joshua Homme) characterized by extended 'jamming' over a single guitar riff.
The Vinyl edition of the album is called Rated X and includes different art work.

This heavy, guitar-driven music can be ponderous, coarse, intense, depressive, aggressive and even violent at times, and the latest generation of stoners all seem to reference the now-defunct Kyuss as pioneers of their particular scene.
While that protostoner band is long gone, ex-Kyuss guitarist Joshua Homme has rallied handsomely with his Queens of the Stone Age.
Josh Homme clearly has his high-decibel act down pat, but it’s the tunefulness and his willingness to experiment within the pop construct that sets the Queens apart from their contemporaries.

And then there's the crunchy stoner-rock side, crafted by Queens of the Stone Age members Joshua Homme and Nick Oliveri and ex-Rage Against the Machine drummer Brad Wilk.
Separately the two parts are superb--Beltrami's sparse strings are plucked with evocative simplicity, and Homme's tracks ring with the flair of vintage '70s arena-rock-god guitar without being overblown.
Yet the scarcity of Homme's tracks (five in all), despite how seamlessly they fit with Beltrami's vision, makes them seem like afterthoughts to the largely orchestral score.

After his first solo albums Josh Homme perceived him as a good coadjutor for his Stone Age band and ever since Mark Lanegan is recommended in this and all flanking scenes - even the reformed MC5 asked him to join him as a singer on tour.
During the tour Nick Oliveri was kicked out of the band in a vociferous manner and Lanegan seemed to be out of the Queens, too, at least till the next album.
Who wants to know what it all was about more precisely has to ask Homme himself - that internal affaires like fights and other excesses are to be kept silent about is one thing Lanegan already learned during his years with the Screaming Trees who also weren't very harmonious either.
