Joshua Humphreys (1813-1873) was the grandson of Joshua Humphreys (1751-1838), the architect of the first line of warships commissioned by the United States Navy, and was the son of Samuel Humphreys (1778-1846), chief constructor of the United States Navy, 1826-1846.
The younger Joshua Humphreys was a naval officer for the United States Navy and the Confederate Navy during the Civil War.
Joshua Humphreys was born 3 June 1813 to Samuel and Letitia Humphreys.

Joshua was apprenticed at an early age to a ship carpenter in Philadelphia.
Humphreys, who replied: "I do not know that I possess the merits attributed to me, but, be they great or small, I owe them all to the flag of my country."--Samuel's son, Andrew Atkinson, soldier, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 2 November, 1810; died in Washington, D. C., 27 December, 1888.
General Humphreys was elected a member of the American philosophical society in 1857, a member of the American academy of arts and sciences in 1863, and was one of the incorporating members of the National academy of sciences in the last-named year.

Joshua Humphreys was born in Haverford, Pa., 17 June 1751, and as a youth was apprenticed to a shipbuilder in Philadelphia.
Humphreys sailed with other amphibious units for southern New Britain, arriving 15 December; put ashore raider units in rubber boats to seize harbor islands; then stood offshore to provide gunfire support before retiring to Buna that afternoon.
Humphreys decommissioned 26 October 1945 and was sold for scrap 26 August 1946 to National Metal and Steel Corp., Terminal Island, Calif.

 Designing CONSTITUTION
Humphreys not only gained experience in the design and construction of frigates from this association, he also gained introduction to people in positions of power, like Robert Morris, sometimes called the "financier of the Revolution." In the years following the peace, Humphreys became an established shipbuilder in Philadelphia.
Humphreys also provided an estimate of the quantities of timber necessary, from 50,000 locust treenails in 18-, 24-, and 30-inch lengths, to 18,000 feet of four inch plank for bottom and ceiling planking, to one live oak stern post thirty feet long and twenty-two inches square.
Joshua Humphreys had given his 44-gun frigate design the name "Terrible," meaning "Awesome," long before President Washington picked the name Constitution for the frigate to be built in Boston.

He was the son of Samuel Humphreys (1778-1846), chief constructor U.S.N., and grandson of Joshua Humphreys (1751-1838), the designer of the Constitution and other famous frigates of the war of 1812, sometimes knowr as the father of the American navy.
In the earlier part of the Civil War Humphreys was employed as a topographical engineer with the Army of the Potomac, and rendered conspicuous services in the Seven Days Battles.
Soon after this he was assigned to command a division of the V. corps, and at the battle of Fredericksburg he distinguished himself greatly in the last attack of Maryes heights.

Humphreys had been among the shipwrights Knox had consulted in 1791, and he was in complete agreement as to the type of ships the new navy would require.
In a letter to Pennsylvania Senator Robert Morris, Humphreys offered his opinion that since the government could not afford to build a great fleet in terms of numbers, the frigates must be large and strong, yet fast.
Humphreys felt that the American frigates should be constructed in such a way that "in blowing weather" they would prevail over double-decked warships, yet be fast enough to escape an overly large enemy if necessary.
